Cinematic metal quintet DISCONNECTED SOULS are delighted to unveil their debut conceptional album, Fragments of Consciousness. From adventures in gothic fantasy realms to deadly club settings to a dystopian celebration of the world's end, DISCONNECTED SOULS deliver an intriguing take on the human experience.

"Fragments of Consciousness was originally intended to be a double release, however we elected to split this in two in order to keep the momentum going after the success of the Warring Elements EP. There is a conceptual story being told across these albums that pertains to the Mischievous Spirit, introduced on the aforementioned release.

There is a huge amount of variety on this album and with this release we hope to define the genre of 'Cinematic Metal'; each track is a story and is brought to life using the exact musical palette that is needed to convey the message needed.

I don’t expect that this will be an easy listen and you might be positively baffled by what’s going on, but hopefully you’ll agree that we fulfilled our objectives of producing something different, and you’ll feel enriched for having had the experience (positive or negative)!" - Fletch, DISCONNECTED SOULS.

Their debut EP Warring Elements concluded with the track "Mischievous Spirits". In Fragments of Consciousness, we follow a Mischievous Spirit as it seeks to make sense of the human world. Beginning with "Delirium", this deadly night club-esque anthem draws together the heavy with hip-hop elements all entwined in the outfit's eclectic style. "Dissonant Whispers" and "Petrichor" offer ethereal soundscapes, the former with a dark fantasy twist - beware the sirens. "Plague Rats" unleashes the thundering heavy  while "Silence of the Doves" dives into the chaotic with a progressive arrangement and haunting melodies. "Fragments" featuring Jeremy Valentyne (NEW YEARS DAY), is a melancholy synth-pop offering that is followed by the jazzy sounds of "Monachopsis"; the demise of the Earth but not as you know it. The concluding "Iyashikei" brings an ambient end.

Delirium

"We chose Delirium for our next single due to it demonstrating Disconnected Souls' diversity in sound; a crunchy djent base with some heaping spoonfuls of hip hop, EDM, and Euro-pop laid over top. Something entirely different to Dissonant Whispers, yet still us. Lyrically, Delirium deals with the topic of addiction, particularly how it can cause a person to close themselves off from their friends, family, and reality itself, while others prey on their vulnerability." – Patrick

“A full Industrial ambience fills the song, but always contrasting with aggressive and bombastic parts, with vocals going from clean singing to harsh snarls, to male to female chants contrasts”

Fragments (Ft. Jeremy Valentyne)

'Fragments was an attempt to write a catchy synthpop track and was very heavily inspired by the band ‘The Birthday Massacre’. The structure is a lot more conventional than some of our others and uses comparatively few instruments; I wanted to focus on big sounds and hence the big focus on the bell pad synth. Funnily enough I actually wrote most of the track using just this because I felt particularly moved by it! As things progressed, the more experimental elements such as bird samples, 5/4 time signature section and choir harmony vocals came in. A particularly highlight for me was that Jeremy (New Years Day) agreed to provide the guitar solo and he did a fantastic job of staying true to the original part that I wrote, but adding his own unique twist on it. I hope you enjoy!" – Fletch

“The band premiered the new lyric video Tuesday. The song features a distinct blend of goth and synthwave with even the slightest touch of of Type O Negative influence. That influence is exhibited through the song’s keyboard line and the manner in which the vocals are delivered.”

Loveless

"Sonically, 'Loveless' is largely inspired by the heavy, 'clubby' electronic metalcore sound of bands like I SEE STARS and VOID OF VISION, and I wanted to capture that vibe for this track. 'Loveless' is a very personal song to me. I won't go into the specifics, and let the lyrics speak for themselves. It may take a long time to realise and recognise some very important parts of your identity, but when you do, things become a lot clearer." - Patrick

Dissonant Whispers

"The origins of this track date back to prior to the completion of our Warring Elements EP, so this has been gently stewing in the background for a while. It’s been nice to have a slower paced approach, contrasting some of our tracks that have been completed in only a few months! I think this is noticeable in the careful crafting of both the orchestral parts and the textural FX layers. There are a lot of undulating parts which contribute to the wide dynamics – all with the aim of taking you on an emotional roller-coaster; as always, we intend to really make an experience for the listener. So, what are you waiting for? Come and take a spiritual voyage with us into an ethereal realm…” –Fletch

“DISCONNECTED SOULS sound continues to evolve as the quintet thrive on embracing a vast array of influences, both musical and conceptual. “Dissonant Whispers” unveils a Gothic and discordant theatricality not previously seen. Beware the whispers so dissonant.”

Kintsukuroi

“‘Kintsukuroi’ (金繕い), translated to English as “golden repair”, is a Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with powdered gold – the gold fills in the cracks, emphasising the scars, and thus, embracing the history and newfound beauty of the object. The people around me go through so many hardships in life, and I wanted to write that despite all the pain that they’ve been going through, I sorely wish that they will come out the other side stronger and more “beautiful” (in a metaphorical sort of sense). I’m not usually one for writing positive lyrics; there’s a lot of bad in the world to write about; so this song took on a very bittersweet sound – soulful and melancholic, but mixed with hope of a gilded metamorphosis.” - Patrick

“Following their ethereal single release “Petrichor”, “Kintsukuroi” delivers intense energy through anthemic choruses, hard-hitting breakdowns and a hardstyle interlude with an unexpected edge. Emotional vocals deliver intimate cleansing while downright guttural heavy carries an unrelenting fear. DISCONNECTED SOULS strive to create material that is compelling but also challenges and broadens the horizons of their audience. Contrapuntal melodies, carefully crafted, cultivate an immersive atmosphere that aptly reflects the track’s lyrical content.”

Petrichor

We're thrilled to present "Petrichor" - an avant-garde offering inspired by the natural phenomenon. Petrichor is a distinctive earthy scent often experienced after a heavy storm. We have strived to combine metal and classical instrumentation to deliver a haunting portrayal of nature at work." - Holly

“This is an unusual piece that intentionally diverges from the previous tracks DISCONNECTED SOULS have produced. “Petrichor” is a fantastical experiment which establishes the genre mixing and creative composition that is to come in their next chapter.”

Debut EP

Warring Elements

‘Warring Elements’ is the debut EP from progressive metallers Disconnected Souls.

Based in Chester/ Manchester, the band wanted to create something different, something that incorporates a range of metal subgenres whilst maintaining a unique sound. The seven track EP tells the story of two opposing forces as they battle with each other and attempt to make sense of the world around them. It isn’t a straight-forward as good versus evil, it is far more complex than that.

‘Emergence’ and ‘Divergence’ link together to create a dramatic and theatrical opening to the EP. These tracks draw from influences of symphonic metal respecting Holly’s vocals and the use of orchestral instruments. The heavy breakdown introduces oriental motifs and brings a feeling of fantasy to the track.

‘Oathbreaker’ combines what is best described as a heavy hard rock track with a synth fuelled breakdown. Keeping a sense of the eerie and dissonant, the first verse sees Patrick and Holly’s vocals deliver an emotional and ethereal harmony.

Experimenting with song structure is hugely important to Disconnected Souls and that can be seen in ‘Deviate’. It contains but one chorus and yet, it doesn’t feel lacking through the instrumentation of the breakdown and outro.

‘Shatter’ is best described as a ballad. It’s not your normal ballad by any means but guitar tones, keys and synths have all been carefully used to produce a track that conforms to this style, with a Disconnected Souls twist of course. The double kicks on the bass drum run throughout the chorus giving a boost of energy and Patrick’s harsh vocals introduce that distorted tone that keeps this track grounded in their sound. This track also features a number of guest musicians and artists in the ‘The Choir of Souls’: Courtney Dean, Matthew Simon Fletcher, Felix Hughes (LycanFell), Helen Jarsdel, Patrick Lloyd, Thomas Lloyd (Curse Of Dawn), Lee Mintz (Mithya, DSME), Conner Nickols (Transplant Junkie), Lindzi North (Curse Of Dawn), Holly Royle, Jordan Taylor, Iona Woods, Jonny Young (Fight The Tornado), William Alex Young (The Enigma Division and Defences).

The title track, ‘Warring Elements’, is the heaviest on the EP and was created around the idea of two opposing forces – the warring elements. Disconnected Souls use eight-string guitars and for this track, they really wanted to make use of this. The aggressive guitar tone, immense bass and techno style synths draw together to form an incredible track. This track brings in new techniques and experimentation; the rap section prior to the breakdown explores Patrick’s vocal style and brings another dimension to the track. The breakdown itself is monstrous. The half-time section replicates the slow-motion feel of a dramatic fight; the climax of the action. The dynamics of the track change suddenly with an intricate piano melody following the breakdown. The piano melody includes the main motifs from all of the tracks on this EP wonderfully drawing together the concept that runs throughout.

‘Mischievous Spirits’ brings a very different sound the release. This bonus track is an unusual addition that greatly deviates from the other tracks. This instrumental features a variety of traditional folk instruments including Felix Hughes’ performance on the kalimba. It is an incredible ethereal sound. Despite being so different, it has received great praise from fans and brings a calming end to the dramatics of the previous tracks.
